Educating Tomorrow’s Filmmakers Today

Come celebrate the best of Ojai Valley's young filmmakers. The Youth Film & Video Festival is intended to provided to provide an opportunity for them to showcase their talents in front of an audience. Our mission is to expose youth to the powerful abilities of film and video, to educate, to communicate and to motivate others in the classroom, in our community, in our families, in our environment and in our society.

Environmental Learning Camp, Ojai, 2000 - by Alicia Cattoni, 11th Grade, Nordhoff High School. A short documentary covering the Environmental Learning Camp held at Nordhoff High School this past year. (05:00)

The Forgotten Bowl - by Amelia Fries Hostka and Jordan Fries Hostka, 6th Grade, Mira Monte Elementary School. A short documentary explores The Foster Bowl today and yesterday and shows you why it is now better termed “The Forgotten Bowl.” (05:00)

Goodbyes - by Sharon Esquivel, Crystal Hewitt, Dani Lopez, and Alyson Weeces - Students from Nordhoff High School. A short piece portraying the emotional turmoil and confusion surrounding the issues of teenage depression and suicide. (05:00)

Dance Video - by Rachel Kuehn and Kensey Pease, 6th Grade, Mira Monte Elementary School. Original choreographed dance routines to modern music. (08:00)

A Week with an Ojai Soccer Player - by Joseph Kuehn, 8th Grade, Matilija High School, and Rachel Kuehn, 6th Grade, Mira Monte Elementary School. A young soccer player’s life is documented from dusk ‘til dawn for one week. (08:00)

The Roots of Surfing - by Justin Strauss, 8th Grade, Ojai Valley School (at time of production). Do you know how surfing began? This short documentary traces the roots of surfing back to the 18th Century! (10:00)

Short Form (11 - 20 minutes)

The Chessit - by Luke Sommer and Andy Thurston, 10th Grade, Home Schooled, Ojai. Short story format with stop-motion animation portrays the complex maneuverings in a game of chess and the making of a video. (11:00)

The Lone Power Rangers - by Luke Sommer and Ben Gray, 10th Grade, Home Schooled, Ojai, and featuring Caleb Sommer, Luke’s younger brother. What happens when the infamous Power Rangers can’t fight evil? Will they prevail? When it comes to saving the world - they take the cake! All music and sound is original. (15:00)


Short, Long Form (21 - 30 minutes)

Those Who Wait - by Max Greene, The Thacher School, Ojai. Featuring Alden Blair, Chris Bonewitz, Paul Bonewitz, Logan Clark, Rob Dickson, Michael Hammer, and Bryan Thompson. Created originally as an independent school project, Max Greene’s video examines the difficulty and fragility of being your own unique individual. (27:00)

Boarderline - by Thomas Walker, 12th Grade, Villanova High School (at time of production). A bodyboarding extravaganza....documenting four young body-boarders edited with pop music and...featuring multiple short vignettes from Thomas’ travels. (30:00)

The Big Show - by Ojai Youth Foundation Student Members: Tyson Babayco, Alex Dwire, Melissa Ireta, Max Kuhl, Seveo Lara, Mike Matzke, Taylor Moore, Joi-James Muller, Ashley Thomas. This 30 minute youth variety show aired on Ch. 8 and includes everything from a cooking show to the opening of the Ojai Skate Park to “youth-on-the-street” interviews documenting Ojai youth’s perceptions on a variety of topics. Don’t miss the debut of local band, Punishment! (30:00)
