The Mask Maker
During World War I, soldiers severely disfigured in combat were encouraged
by the French government not to show their faces for fear of tainting
the heroic image of the soldier. Had they survived unscathed, or had they
died, they might have been called heroes. Instead, they were called the
men with broken faces and were sentenced to the shadows. This is a story
of just such a scarred soldier and a mask maker whose internal scars led
him to help.
