The Compassionate
Eye
The life of the late photojournalist Horace Bristol, narrated by Graham
Nash. Working with author John Steinbeck in the 1930s, Bristol's haunting
photographs of migrant workers in California would inspire the literary
classic, Grapes of Wrath. During World War II, Bristol worked in the Navy's
photography unit under the legendary Edward Steichen. In 1959, when Horace's
wife Virginia committed suicide, he destroyed all the prints and negatives
he could find and left photojournalism. 35 years later, a trunk containing
thousands of negatives was recovered. At 85, Bristol's life as a photojournalist
was reborn. His final project documents a derelict oil refinery near his
home in Ojai.
