I long suspected that the newsroom requested that these series have their own website just to bypass the subscriber-only access to News-Press content. Makes sense, come awards time there's more exposure. I was to learn during the Michael Jackson trial, that people want news when they want to know, and as a Web designer you man the front line. Cold Cases - A New Look at Unsolved Killings
This is where the web truely shines. In depth news coverage is expanded online with bios and family photo albums of the profiled victims along with scanned newspaper clippings from the time of their murders. The News-Press set up a tip line and we worked with cold case detectives to host a live internet chat at the conclusion of the series.

Olympics 2004 - Athens
Santa Barbara News-Press sent John Zant to Athens to cover the Games. This site was to go live at 8:00 a.m. on day one. When I left the night before, there was no content from John and no TV schedule (they were still working on that too.) Come in early because news is truely a 24-hour business.

Through the Roof: The $1 Million Home
The median price of a single-family home on the South Coast of Santa Barbara County reaches the $1 million mark in summer of 2004. The newsroom wants a website, send it down to the girls in "gift wrap." A little clipart, a little typography, add content and PRESTO, another insta-site.

Business Outlook '04
This advertiser-sponsored special section, created by the newsroom, was the yearly "state of the union" viewpoint from the business editor. I utilized the same artwork created for the cover and reworked it to fit the web format.

Prep Football '03
The News Press' annual high school football preview was always the most creative. The theme for 2003 was, is it OK to call bobbleheaded football players cute? See the campaign in Prep Football '04.

Terror Behind Bars
Scott Hadly, News-Press senior writer, investigates why an inmate at the maximum-security penitentiary at Lompoc already suspected of killing a corrections officer, still had not gone to trial. I wanted to use this spooky photo but, it would not fit. So I stretched the sunset sky and added black bars to simulate the prison.

For the 2004 "campaign," the page editor used an election theme complete with campaign buttons designed for each team. See the bobbleheads in Prep Football '03.
