Little Guys - Coming Soon

Dear Friends,

I forgot to point out in my
last email that all three of
the corporations mentioned,
especially Sharp and Sony,
were dubious and skeptical
when I first spoke to them.
It was only after they
checked out our web page
that they decided they
wanted to become
involved with the Festival.
Kudos to Mary Beckman!

Steve Grumette, Artistic Director

Whether repurposing content from our advertiser-sponsored special sections or soliciting sponsors for an online product, newspress.com became an additional source of revenue for the Santa Barbara News-Press. Oftentimes, this was our customers' only online exposure. (see also Little Guys)

No Mary, it's not just clipart when you use it, it's magic.

Santa Barbara County Wine Guide

This online publication of the Santa Barbara News-Press saw a huge increase in traffic once the world was introduced to Miles and Jack from "Sideways," the hit movie.

Weddings 2004

This yearly edition to one of News-Press' numerous special sections brought out the girly in me. In addition, classified used this as their Celebrations template. Anyone wishing to place an announcement could fill in the online form with their information. It would be sent to the admin via email and she would post it to the CMS, just like the news content. The web designer doesn't have to do a thing until next year. See also Weddings 2003.

Business Outlook '04

This advertiser-sponsored special section, created by the newsroom, was the yearly "state of the union" viewpoint from the business editor. I utilized the same artwork created for the cover and reworked it to fit the web format.

Home & Garden Spring Planting Issue

Best rule of thumb, keep it simple, let the content be king. I went with a tertiary color scheme and used the photo from the cover for this twice-yearly special section. When I didn't have alot of time for details, this simple formula worked every time.

Youth Activity Guide

This was the annual summertime listing of camps, classes and activities. The newspaper runs an alphabetical guide populated with lots of advertisements. I conviced the editor that it would be easier for our online readers to find what they are looking for if we sorted by category.

Chefs of Santa Barbara - 2004 Restaurant Guide & Recipe Book

A window shopping trip to the newly-opened Sur la Table just inspired me to create something french provincial for the next chefs online. The advertising director thought that it reminded her of her grandmother. Oh well, at least the colors match Fireman Mike. You might want to bookmark this one, because in order to post it here I had to cancel the search engines. Deep-fried Chocolate Stuffed Bananas, yum!

ABODE

Billed as " your guide to making your home into a showplace," this was the autumn issue - for home, spring being more for garden. I used the same simple approach as above with a..., damn it, what do they call that scheme where the colors are next to each other on the wheel?

Back to School

Seventy five percent of my job as web designer for the Santa Barbara New-Press was repackaging News-Press content for the web. Here's the annual back to school issue.

Chefs of Santa Barbara - 2005 Restaurant Guide & Recipe Book

Man, what happened? There are only about half as many recipes in the 2005 book. Maybe those chefs thought they were giving away too many secrets. The guest chef for that year was actor Dennis Franz. He shares his recipe for Baked Crab Cakes with Avocado Mousse. Who knew?
